The Boston Harborfest is an annual patriotic celebration which takes place for a week before the Fourth of July. It is one of the largest patriotic events in the country and draws in over 2.5 million tourists, visitors, locals and families who come to partake in the many activities and over 200 events in Boston planned throughout the week. There is something for everyone and over half of the events are free to attend. The first Boston Harborfest was held in 1982 when there were 35 events planned over the course of three days.
Boston Harborfest is a great celebration of the city’s rich Colonial heritage and maritime history and features many eventslike revolution era re-enactmentssuch as the Boston Tea Party, early 19th Century gun drills and the Boston Massacre. There are also historical tours that provide visitors with a snapshot of the American Revolution and the Civil War.
The Boston Harborfest also has many events organized at practically all the Freedom Trail main attractions such as specialtours of the famous North Church, the Burial Ground, the Old State House and an oration at Faneuil Hall. Freedom Trail walking tours are also popular during this time with all the historical sites decked out for the occasion.
The Boston Harborfest also has many other events planned such as a parade of ships, scavenger hunts and whale watching expeditions and cruises. Many of the city’s major tourist attractions such as the New England Aquarium Plaza and the USS Constitution plan special events for the Harborfest.The Boston Harborfest also has a lot of entertainment planned with many concerts and musical performances by local bands and artists playing all kinds of genres from rock, alternative, blues, disco. The concert series takes place on the City Hall Plaza esplanade.
The Boston Harborfest is a family-friendly celebration with many of the events open to both children and adults; however children have a special place during the week with an entire day dedicated to them. Children’s Day is full of free and fun gamesand activities for kids of all ages such as juggling, dancing, balloons, live musical entertainment, face-painting, interactive history, marine education and much more. Several Boston-area organizations such as Historic New England and the New England Aquarium also plan out special educational activities for kids.
Another iconic Boston Harborfest event is Chowderfest during which many local restaurants compete while serving up clam chowder soup which is a New England delicacy. It’s the perfect opportunity to sample many types of clam chowder soup and pick your favorite one. The restaurant winner of the public vote claims the coveted title of “Boston’s Best Clam Chowder.”
During Boston Harborfest, the City Hall Plaza also turns into a market with many booths by local businesses and organizations giving out information and free samples. Entry to the enclosed area with all the vendors is $10. The Boston Harborfest is not only a very popular local event but its popularity also extends regionally and nationally. It has won several recognitions and awards such as “Top 100 Events in North America” by the American Bus Association, but alsothe “Festival of the Year” by Events Business News and “Family Favorite Festival” by the Boston Parents’ Paper.
