The Boston Film Festival


The Boston Film Festival is an annual film festival which takes place in Boston every September for a week. The film festival was founded in 1984 and was established to present films in order to enlighten, entertain but also educate spectators but also provide a platform for emerging filmmakers to present their artwork. The Boston Film Festival showcases dozens of all types of films such as documentary, animation, shorts, feature films and much more, including many world premieres, US premieres, East Coast premieres and Boston premieres.

Since the beginning, the Boston Film Festival has been held in various venues around the city’s perimeter such as the Kendall Square Landmark Theatres in Cambridge and the Orson Welles Cinema. Today, the Boston Film Festival takes place at the popular Stuart Street Playhouse which is a huge 425-seat state-of-the-art independent cinema with a new 30-foot super Glo screen with a Dolby Digital sound system. It isideally located on Stuart Street, in Boston’s Theater District, next to the Boston Public Garden and across from the historic Beacon Hill district.

The Boston Film Festival features film screening in many genres such as comedy, drama, horror and thrillers, and these productions compete for various awards in different categories.Some of these awards are for; best film, best documentary, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actress, best new actress, best young actor, best ensemble cast, best screenplay, best cinematography, and awards for best mass impact award, eco film, short film, soundtrack, visionary filmmaker award, career achievement and patrons of the arts.


The Boston Film Festival

The Boston Film Festival is more than just film screenings; it provides a platform for learning all about the inner works of filmmaking and directing. Throughout the week of the festival, there are many Q&A panel sessions and roundtable discussions organized with emerging and established filmmakers but also Oscar and Academy Awards nominated and winning actors and actresses. The Boston Film Festival also organizes many parties and receptions throughout the festival at both the Stuart Street Playhouse but also other nightlife venues and restaurants around Boston.

Since its foundation, the Boston Film Festival has been the staging ground for the premiere screening of major Hollywood films such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Deliver Us from Evil, The US vs. John Lennon,the Last Kiss, and North Country. Many major Hollywood actors and actresses have also appeared at the festival to present awards, some of the most notable ones are; George Clooney, Freddie Prinze Jr, Maria Menounos,  Adam Brody, Dane Cook, Aaron Eckhart, Brittany Snow and Mike O’Malley. The festival has also honored some great filmmakers such as Sir Ridley Scott and prominent actors such as Val Kilmer and Uma Thurman.

In order to watch the films screenings and attend the events at the Boston Film Festival, festival goers can purchase tickets online at the festival’s website but also on-site at the Stuart Street Playhouse. Tickets are $9 per film for general admission. If you’re driving to the festival, there is validated parking available at 200 Stuart Street Garagefor$3 off.
